All SPL Locations Temporarily Closed

Update (May 22, 2020): We have received many questions in recent weeks about when libraries in Saskatoon will reopen or begin providing alternate ways to access library materials. We therefore wanted to provide a quick update as to what we know right now.

We have received confirmation from the province that libraries are part of fourth phase of the Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan. However, in a meeting on Friday, May 22, we were given permission to start curbside pickup of library items before Phase 4 begins. We are very excited about this and are currently working out plans for how we can offer this service in the most effective and safest way possible. Please stay tuned for updates!

Library facilities cannot reopen until Phase 4 begins, and there is no date associated with that phase at this time. However, we do know that even when libraries are allowed to reopen, this will be a gradual process and there will still be physical distancing protocols and other restrictions that determine what programs and services we are able to offer. More restrictions will be lifted over time until SPL’s services are fully restored. SPL employees are currently putting together a comprehensive reopening plan and are exploring many unique ways of making library services available. As has always been the case, the safety of patrons and employees is our top priority and will remain so moving forward.

SPL has been continuing to offer many modified services over the past two months, and you can click here to find out more about how to access the library right now. Thank you for your patience and understanding during these challenging times. We will continue posting updates on our website and social media channels as they become available.

SPL made the difficult decision to temporarily close all library locations as of Monday, March 16. While the risk of transmission remains low in our community, the Saskatchewan Health Authority recommends social distancing and limiting gatherings at this time. As such, SPL determined that closing public libraries is in the best interest of the community’s health and safety. Alongside the city and province, we will be reassessing on a daily basis and providing updates on SPL’s operations on our website and social media channels.

Holds will be temporarily suspended while the libraries are closed. Further, SPL is waiving all late fees accumulated beginning March 13 and book drops are closed, so please hold onto all library items for now as you will not be fined.

You will still be able to use SPL’s online resources and many other services during this closure.

While we hope to reopen the library as soon as possible, the health of patrons and employees is our focus. Thank you for your patience during this time.

Questions & Answers

Q: I don't have a library card. Can I get one now to use SPL's Digital Services?

A: Yes! You can now go online to get a temporary library card number that will allow you to use the many great resources on the Digital Library section of our website. Click here and fill out the information on the page. Please note, the number you get after filling out the form will only provide limited access to resources. We will contact you via email with a full-service barcode after we process your information.

A: As of March 16, fines will no longer accumulate on your account. Book drops are closed so please hold onto your library items until SPL reopens.
