Saskatoon Public Library


Saskatoon Public Library utilizes casual employees on an ‘as required’ basis.  Employees must be available to work primarily on the public service desks throughout the library system. Casual Employees must be available for call-in during all hours of opening (ie. including evenings and weekends).  Casual Employees replace regular employees who are absent from work; therefore, the classification level for each casual shift may vary.





  1. Perform a complete range of duties related to circulation of library materials.


  2. Utilize library and community resources to locate and provide information requested by clients and instruct and advise library clients in the use of library resources. This may include on-line information, retrieval, and resources.


  3. May be required to oversee workflow and deal with facility issues in absence of the regular shift supervisor.


  4. May be asked to present children’s programs, on an ad hoc basis.


  5. Perform clerical duties or assist with projects and programs/services, as required.




  • Completion of a recognized university degree in the humanities, social sciences or education,

    OR a University degree with significant work related experience,

  • Consideration may be given to those with a Library Technician's diploma,

  • Work experience in dealing with the public,

  • Experience operating a cash register, and demonstrated ability to handle basic cash/electronic transactions,

  • Prior work experience in conducting children’s programs is an asset,

  • Knowledge of and practical experience in the use of computers, Internet, and on-line resources,

  • Must have considerable flexibility in terms of availability, and be able to work weekdays, evenings and weekends,

  • Employees must be able to work a minimum of 5 shifts per month,

  • Must be available 4 out of 7 days per week for Casual Library Assistant work and be able and able to work in at least 4 locations/branches in the city,

  • Keyboarding speed of 35 w.p.m. with at least 95% accuracy,

  • Ability to work on short notice,

  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relations with employees and library users. Must be comfortable in providing library service to all age levels, and to different ethnic groups,

  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt readily to new procedures, materials, etc.

  • Ability to explain and implement procedures and regulations,

  • Ability to exercise good judgement,

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 11.4 kg,

  • Proficiency in the  English language, oral and written,

  • Proven reliability,

  • Acceptable current Criminal Record check is required.



    The hours of work per pay period will vary and there is no guarantee to a minimum number of hours. It is important, however, to work often enough to maintain skills and retain familiarity with materials and procedures (ie. At least 5 shifts per month).


The maximum number of hours per week is 36.25.



Hourly rate is dependent on the shift requirement.

Salary range: $18.38 - $23.12 (2014 rates).
